Broughal Middle School

Broughal Middle School

D’Huy has been the Engineer of Record for the School District since 1991 assisting the District with all of the facility needs. As an extension of our Resident Project Engineer services to the District, D’Huy assisted the Owner with developing the programming needs for the new Middle School prior to selecting the Design Team. Once the Design Team was selected, D’Huy played an integral role in developing the plans and providing value engineering recommendations to ensure the District received the highest quality project at the best value.

The complexities of the Broughal project included a limited 4.3 acre urban site, the need to maintain the existing school during construction, a nearby church and university operations, and significant over-excavation adjacent to City to remove buried debris.

This LEED Gold Level project included a living roof that is also white-reflective, rainwater harvesting system and extensive daylighting to maximize LEED credits for energy savings. Construction phase sustainable practices were implemented including a waste management program in which over 80% of construction debris was diverted from landfills, and an indoor air quality program to minimize the introduction of moisture into building systems and reduce the quantity of VOCs in building components. The installation of regionally harvested materials, recycled materials and certified wood products were a critical factor in obtaining Gold Level Certification.

This project was completed on schedule (24 months) for students to return to school in 2009 and while the existing middle school remained in continuous operation on the same site. The project was completed with zero change orders which speaks to the integrated team approach and the quality of the construction management. The building contains classrooms, science labs, a media center, band and choral rooms, a plantetarium and greenhouse, gymnasium and auditorium.
