Slab on Grade and Pavement Investigation

Assessing concrete slabs on grade is a complex task because performance is impacted by many factors such as subsurface soil conditions, subsurface moisture, concrete mix design, slab thickness, control joint spacing, reinforcing, curing methods and air temperature and humidity conditions both during installation and subsequent building use. With more than three decades of design and investigation experience involving concrete slabs on grade and exterior concrete paving, our forensic team investigates problems such as cracking, heaving, settlement, shrinkage, curling, levelness and flatness, and the effects of fire on concrete slab integrity.

Understanding and addressing concrete slab problems requires detailed studies of existing conditions and also typically involves material testing. Most of our investigations include both an assessment of the causes of specific concrete slab problems and recommendations for repair, including retrofit design and preparation of repair drawings. In addition to assessing slab on grade problems, DEI performs load capacity analyses for a variety of clients interested in determining the adequacy of an existing slab to support new loading conditions.
